Pantaenius continued its support for the 2009 Rolex Fastnet Race |
 |
Pantaenius were again pleased to be asked to sponsor the safe turning mark set South West of the Fastnet Rock for the 2009 Rolex Fastnet Race organised by the Royal Ocean Racing Club. This year it was agreed that the mark be fitted with AIS to improve safety and aid navigation in the testing conditions. Just over 10% of the Race participants were Pantaenius clients who must have been pleased to see the mark before heading back to Plymouth for the finish. The race results can be found at Rolex Fastnet Race 2009 Results page. |

Pantaenius were pleased to attend the 2009 RNLI Charity Ball which took place at the Waterfront Restaurant in Plymouth on Saturday 27th June. It was a particularly poignant event as Shaun Beavon, the husband of Denise (Superyacht Customer Services) is a crew member aboard the Plymouth based lifeboat “Sybil Mullen Glover” an All Weather Severn Class launch which has been in frequent demand this Summer. The RNLI is the preferred charity of Pantaenius UK Ltd.

| PANTAENIUS - A TRULY INTERNATIONAL BRAND |
 |
Pantaenius UK Ltd recently hosted the Pantaenius Group Administrative Circle Meeting at the Plymouth office where fellow employees from the German, Danish, Austrian, Swedish and Monaco offices attended. Unfortunately due to commitments the Croatian and USA offices were not present. The meeting was very successful and the topics discussed reflected the truly international flavour of the Pantaenius brand. The business was conducted in English but over 12 different languages could be spoken by the various representatives!

Five members of staff went over to Hamburg to join in the group Christmas celebrations. This was an opportunity for those who don’t get the chance to visit the Hamburg office on business to go across and meet some of their counterparts – and extend their stay to take in the Christmas market! |
| Oyster Regatta - Palma 2008 |
| Pantaenius was one of the original sponsors of the Oyster regattas now held in the Caribbean, Mediterranean and the Solent. This strong association with such a prestigious yacht builder enables a close contact with Pantaenius, Oyster owners (clients) and the Oyster team which benefits all at both the time of a sale or the rare unfortunate event of a claim. There are also benefits to the founder and former managing director of Pantaenius UK who still looks after the Oyster connection and clients! He is seen in the photograph wearing the red jacket enjoying the Oyster Palma regatta which took place between 30 September and 4 October 2008. |

| Classic Malts Regatta - July 2008 |
 |
In July 2008, Pantaenius chartered the Moody 36, “Brandy of Troon” and entered a team in the Classic Malts Regatta. Eleven members of staff divided the duration of the Regatta into two legs, ensuring, of course, that each leg included a visit to a distillery and a Keilidh. |
The 2007 Rolex Fastnet and Pantaenius Buoy
The Rolex Fastnet Race is the highlight of the Royal Ocean Racing Club calendar and is considered to be one of the most demanding ocean races with treacherous tides and unpredictable weather over its 608 mile length. The race, which began this year on the 12th August from the Royal Yacht Squadron, Cowes, takes the fleet around the fabled Fastnet Rock and then to the finish at the Plymouth Breakwater; a mouth-watering challenge for those hardy crews in their myriad yachts.
 |
Well that was the route until 1997 when RORC, in conjunction with Pantaenius, added another turning mark now known as the Pantaenius Buoy.
In the past it has been sited approximately 8 miles to the southwest of the Fastnet Rock. With race leaders rounding the Rock, hoisting spinnakers and surfing back through the large fleet (perhaps at night) the potential for high-speed collisions was obvious. The extra leg to the Pantaenius Buoy significantly reduces this risk.
Another mouth-watering prospect for those weary sailors was their welcome at Plymouth and the prospect of enjoying a pint (or three) of ‘Pantaenius Buoy Best’. This heady brew was specially prepared for us by St Austell Breweries. |
Stop press; Pantaenius Buoy Best proved to be a popular tipple with some 3,500 pints consumed by thirsty crews.
Hurricanes and Named Storm Cover
Following the devastation caused by the ‘Ivan’, ‘Katrina’ and others most insurers have urgently reviewed the level of cover they are prepared to offer in the hurricane affected areas.
We are pleased to report that, following extended negotiations with your insurers, we are now able to cover Named Storm Damage anywhere in the Caribbean, ashore or afloat, rig up or down, provided that your yacht is stored the manner described in the Named Tropical Storm Clause. (see the NTS wording).
 |
No longer will there be a storm damage exclusion zone and it is expected that yachts will now disperse to yards throughout the Caribbean, thus spreading the risk, (vessels tended to concentrate at the boundaries of the exclusion zone), and allowing owners more flexibility in their cruising plans as well as providing revenue to those boatyards and support facilities within the old exclusion area.
|
We have contacted the majority of yards in the Caribbean and we are intending to build a database of those able to provide appropriate facilities. It goes without saying that the investment in cradles is not inconsiderable and yards may have only a limited number of them - so it will pay to book early.
Hurricanes hardly happen - foot note to the 2006 Season.
The 2006 Caribbean hurricane season was mercifully quiet; apparently due in part to huge clouds of dust from the Sahara swirling out over the Atlantic and sucking moisture from the air. A comparison of the frequency of dust storms (acquired from satellite imagery) and hurricane activity over recent decades has shown a strong correlation; the more dust in the atmosphere the lower the hurricane activity. Every cloud…
Dust storms are not something we are familiar with in Plymouth but we do occasionally have the ‘big blow’-(see the Plymouth Storm Article).
Oyster Regattas
 |
Pantaenius continues to build on its strong relationship with Oyster Marine and this year sponsored both the Montpelier Oyster Regattas in Antigua (16th-21st April) and Valencia (18th – 22nd June).
The Valencia Regatta was timed to coincide with the Americas Cup. (see Oyster Marine)
Once again our long suffering MD, Barrie Sullivan, dargged himself off to these sunny locations to fly the Pantaenius flag. (see photo left) |
The Sydney Hobart
We would like to extend our congratulations to Dr. Michelle Colenso and her crew on board her Oyster 55 ‘Capricchio of Rhu’ for winning the cruising division of the Sydney Hobart race. This tough ocean race has acquired a fearsome reputation over the years and a win here is a tribute to both yacht and crew.
